I don’t know why but today seemed like the right day to post this. I have been waiting until I had finished my transformation. But now I know that it never really finishes. So here it is. My story. Take it for what it’s worth.
When I got out of university I rushed full tilt into work. I wanted to be the best I could at my job and focused everything I had on that. I never exercised, watched what I ate, or really looked after myself in any way. After 10 years of this I got pretty out of shape. I ballooned from a pretty athletic 190lbs to over 300lbs. It was bad. I couldn’t really play any of the sports I loved. At the end walking up the stairs was hard for me and put me out of breath. After going out to a work dinner one night and seeing myself in the photos the next day I finally realized something had to change. Like many people I had tried a lot of workouts and gyms and failed at them all. Nothing had worked. However, Zak Cox had told me about crossfit and the gym he went to and told me he thought they could help me so I decided to give it try. I was so embarrassed I went to my first workout on the Friday night of Halloween hoping no one else would be there. I was the only one who showed up. It was 21-15-9 Thrusters and Burpees. I couldn’t even do a Burpee. I basically flopped down on the floor and then got back up. But the coach, Ashley Demedeiros, was so awesome and encouraged me through the whole workout. She actually encouraged me to do half but I was to stubborn to listen. When the WOD was done I was crushed. I wasn’t sure what had happened but I was pretty sure it was working because I was so sore. So I decided to stick it out and see what happened. Well, it has now been almost two years and it has been a lot of ups and downs. I still struggle through a lot of WODs and have a lot of movements that I haven’t got yet. But I love going to crossfit and I look forward to going there everyday. In that time I have lost almost 100 lbs and my fitness has improved hugely. I can now do things I never thought I would do again. I look better and I feel better than ever.
I am posting this now for two reasons:
One, because as we go back into September and people start to get back into the routine of everyday life that comes with the ending of summer. If you have ever wanted to get in shape, improve your health, or whatever your goal is I would strongly encourage you to give Natural Strength CrossFit a try. You can walk in no matter where you are at. The coaches are amazing, they know their shit, care about you, and really want you to succeed. They will help you get started no matter what your level. And you will meet some of the most cool and caring people ever. People who will go out of their way to help you succeed. People who’s fitness will amaze you and who genuinely will go out their way to help you get better.
And two, I am really grateful to all of them for what the gym and the whole community has done for me and today felt like a good day to say thank you. Going in everyday is something I always look forward to and I wanted to make this post to say thank you to the for that.
My crossfit journey is only getting started and it is really embarrassing for me to post that before photo but if it encourages one person to give crossfit or my gym a try and it lets the crew at the gym know how grateful I am then it’s worth it.
That’s my story. Future updates to come.
